The film, based on the powerful performance of Fernando Torres as the matriarch Eunice, tells the horrors of the Brazilian dictatorship without being preachy or cruel
Adapted from the novel “I’m Still Here” by Marcel Rubens Paiva; The book is enhanced by its focus on the Paiva family and how each member is terrified and devastated by the disappearance of their father (played with deep affection by Selton Melo). By focusing on the human aspects and the sense of loss of people who have never received or responded to the disappearance of their loved ones, the script is even more powerful. The performances of the young actors are all top-notch – a rare feat in Brazilian cinema – but it is Fernando Torres’ incredibly restrained performance that really connects with you.
In a masterful work, she is compelling and moving without ever becoming melodramatic
This is the best Brazilian film in years, a gift from director Walter Salles (Central Station). Finally, watch out for a brief but powerful cameo by Fernando Montenegro (Oscar-nominated Central Station). "I’m Still Here" is a film to be cherished and cherished.
